It would be true to say that every part of London has antique shops – of varying kinds.
But in order to hunt down that certain elusive piece, you may have to visit a specialist area, or indeed an auction house. The leaders of the auction house pack – Sotheby's, Christies and Bonhams - are in South Kensington and Mayfair.
Other hunting grounds include antique fairs and antique markets. Antique fairs can offer the unusual and the rare, as specialist dealers who don't have a presence in London often attend. We particularly recommend the Olympia Fine Art and Antiques Fair and the Grosvenor House Art & Antiques Fair.
Christie's
James Christie opened his London auction house in 1766. Christie's is a very prestigious establishment auctioning everything that is desirable and exclusive.
Bonhams
Another of Bond Street's major auction houses, Bonhams has salesrooms around the country and, like its neighbour Sotheby's, allows public viewings before the sales.
Sotheby's
All the auction houses featured here are outstandingly prestigious, but it would be fair to say that the daddy of them all is Sotheby's. Founded in 1744, this is where world-famous antiques, jewellery and works of art regularly achieve record prices.
Kensington Church Street
The refined Kensington Church Street, W8, is around the corner from the shopping paradise of Kensington High Street. This narrow winding road is where you will find small antique shops, internationally respected for their collections of paintings, European porcelain, 20th-century decorative arts and Oriental ceramics.
Pimlico Road
On the southern edge of Belgravia, Pimlico Road is a world-famous, specialist fine antique district.
Camden Passage

Beautiful and traffic-free Camden Passage is N1's antique paradise. It's more of a Dickensian labyrinth than a single passage and features arcades and small specialist antique shops. The Mall Antiques Arcade on Upper Street is particularly good for rare, expensive pieces.
Antiquarius
Among the many dealers at Antiquarius, you will find experts selling stunning Baccarat glass, art deco furniture and jewellery and vintage Louis Vuitton trunks. One of the most unusual dealers is Ferguson Fine Art, which specialises in field sport and equestrian antiques.
