About

Discover how pub chat and embellished tales lead to unexpected revelations from a newcomer in the return of Conor McPherson's play The Weir, at Harold Pinter Theatre.

Marking the West End debut of award-winning actor Brendan Gleeson, this strictly limited 12-week run of the Olivier Award-winning play illustrates the power of storytelling and human connection.

What is The Weir about?

Four men meet in Brendan’s pub on the Irish west coast, sharing banter and increasing their boasting with each pint downed. Upon arrival of a stranger, Valerie, they start trying to impress her through their storytelling.

Their talk about the past and present soon entangles with the supernatural, as they weave Irish folklore into their stories. Some tales are more chilling than others – none more so than Valerie’s, which has quite the impact and changes the dynamic of the group.

An exploration of human interactions and hope, this play from McPherson (The Brightening Air, Girl from the North Country) demonstrates the difference storytelling can make in everyday life.

The Weir - The London cast

Jack is played by Brendan Gleeson (known from films In Bruges, The Guard, Paddington 2, The Banshees of Inisherin), making his grand debut on the London West End. Gleeson has won multiple awards, including two British Independent Film Awards and has received numerous nominations for the Golden Globe Awards and the BAFTAs.

Owen McDonnell (Killing Eve) is joining him on stage, playing Brendan. Meanwhile, Seán McGinley (That They May Face the Rising Sun) plays Jim, Kate Phillips (Wolf Hall, Peaky Blinders) is Valerie and Tom Vaughan-Lawlor (The Beautiful Game, Avengers) portrays Finbar.
