With your tickets booked and your dinner plans made, there's often one question on many of our minds when we're heading to the theatre – “what exactly do I wear?” Now, before the despair and daunting prospect of rooting through your wardrobe sets in, we're here to let you know that you don't have to panic.

In the following guide, we'll take you through the dos and don'ts of theatre outfits, making sure you look and feel your best on your next trip to the West End. We'll discuss what to wear to the theatre in London, dress codes, practical styling and even fancy dress. So, before you head off to your next performance, be sure to read our top tips below!

Is there a dress code for West End shows in London?

To put it simply, no! Once upon a time, the theatre might have been seen as a black-tie and ballgown event, but these days, you can wear whatever you like – unless a dress code has been explicitly stated by the theatre or venue beforehand.

With that said, it's important to dress both practically and comfortably, but you can rest easy knowing you won't be turned away at the door because you left your top hat at home.

London theatre dress codes and theatre dress codes elsewhere are quickly becoming a thing of the past, but for peace of mind, always make sure to check the venue's website beforehand.

Can I wear fancy dress to the theatre in London?

Generally speaking, it's not common to wear fancy dress to the theatre in London. Although certain performances such as Mean Girls, Frozen the Musical, and Six sometimes encourage audience participation, you might feel a touch out of place in your French revolutionary costume at a performance of Les Misérables.

If you're intent on wearing fancy dress with your party to the theatre, it's best to check with the venue beforehand. Just consider if you’ll be comfortable sitting for prolonged periods of time in the outfit, and that it doesn’t take up too much room from other theatre-goers.

Do people dress smart for the theatre?

Many people do dress smartly for the theatre. However, as everyone's definition of smart varies, you shouldn't feel obliged to dress to the nines simply because that was the norm in the past. Dress for comfort and practicality, but if you fancy wearing your finer clothes, nothing is stopping you!

Do different theatre venues have different dress codes?

Different venues don't typically operate different dress codes. However, it can be worth nothing that different theatres attract different crowds. For instance, somewhere like the Royal Ballet and Opera is almost guaranteed to attract more suits and dresses than your average performance of Mrs Doubtfire, so just bear that in mind.

Do certain performances require specific clothing?

Most performances will not need a specific type of clothing. There are a few exceptions to this rule though. For example, if you're booked in for a standing performance of Guys and Dolls, you'll want to make sure to wear comfortable footwear and clothing so it doesn't take away from the performance.

Top tips on outfits to wear to the theatre in London

Consider leaving bulky layers and big bags at home – Unless you've booked box seats, London theatre shows seats do not offer much in the way of space and legroom. Bulky layers and bags will minimise your space further, so for your and everyone else's comfort, it's worth considering this.

Dress warm for outdoor performances – During the summer, outdoor performances can experience a dip in temperature during the evening. Be sure to pack some warmer layers just in case.

Wear flat shoes – Not only are heels a nightmare to navigate the Tube in, but they also aren't great for selected theatres. With minimal legroom and potentially raised stalls, it's advised to wear a pair of flat shoes.

What to wear to the theatre in winter?

While temperatures can be freezing outside, some theatres can get very warm inside. During the winter, we advise wearing layers that are easily removed should you need to cool down while inside. It's worth noting that most theatres will also offer a cloakroom service, so if you do happen to be wearing a bulkier winter jacket, it might be best to leave it there.

What to wear to a musical?

Musicals in London operate a very loose dress code, so feel free to wear whatever you like! People often incorporate some of the themes behind their favourite musicals into their outfits too.

Can you wear shorts to the theatre?

Yes, you can wear shorts to the theatre. On hotter days in summer, it is perfectly acceptable to wear shorts to see a show. Be aware that at the opera, visitors tend to dress more smartly, so you might want to opt for a more formal outfit. It's best to continue to wear full-length trousers or dresses there.

Can I wear jeans to the theatre?

Wearing jeans at the theatre is perfectly acceptable. Regular theatre-goers will know that many people choose jeans when visiting the theatre, so if you're thinking about wearing them on your next visit, you won't have anything to worry about.
