About

Watch Imelda Staunton and her daughter Bessie Carter in the 21st century adaptation of the controversial classic Mrs Warren's Profession at the Garrick Theatre in Covent Garden this summer.

This gripping play reimagines the story of Kitty and Vivie Warren, a tale that caused quite a stir in 20th-century London for its themes of social injustice, and economic and gender inequality.

What is Mrs Warren’s Profession at the Garrick Theatre about?

Celebrated actress Imelda Staunton (Gypsy, The Crown, Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?) and her daughter Bessie Carter (Dear Octopus, Bridgerton) will mark their first on-stage collaboration this summer as they star in the highly anticipated West End revival of Mrs Warren’s Profession.

The story follows the relationship between Kitty Warren (Imelda Staunton) and her daughter Vivie Warren (Bessie Carter). Intelligent trailblazer Vivie, a graduate of the University of Cambridge, moves to Surrey to live with her mother for the first time. However, their relationship quickly takes a turn when she discovers that her mother has made her fortune from running a chain of brothels.

Mrs Warren is quick to defend why she turned to prostitution, discussing the negative stereotypes surrounding sex workers and highlighting the double standards faced by women. Expect themes of social inequality, feminism and moral failings in this gripping limited show.

The boundary-breaking Mrs Warren’s Profession was written in 1894 by Nobel Prize winning Irish playwright George Bernard Shaw. The play was banned by Lord Chamberlain shortly after its first public production in London in 1902 for its topics of prostitution, social inequality and economic disempowerment. Today, it is considered one of the greatest literary masterpieces in history.

Who is in the cast of Mrs Warren’s Profession?

World-renowned actress Imelda Staunton returns to the West End in the role of Mrs Warren, joined by her real-life daughter Bessie Carter as Vivie Warren.   Four-time Olivier Award-winning director Dominic Cooke (Follies, The Crucible) has joined forces with critically acclaimed producer Sonia Friedman (Mean Girls, The Book of Mormon, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child) to transform this moral classic into a 21st century sensation.
