History of London’s Christmas lights

Bright and colourful Christmas window displays in Mayfair London.

London’s Christmas traditions have a rich and fascinating history. In the 19th century, Queen Victoria and Prince Albert popularised Christmas trees and indoor decorations such as candles, garlands and ornaments, but outdoor lighting wasn’t part of the tradition. Electricity was still emerging, making decorative street displays rare and costly.

The city’s famous Christmas lights didn’t appear until the 1950s, when Regent Street first lit up in 1954 to lift post-war spirits, followed by Oxford Street in 1959. The tradition paused during the 1970s due to economic pressures but returned to sparkling form later that decade.

From simple strings of bulbs, it evolved into spectacular themed designs and celebrity switch-ons, transforming London’s streets into a global symbol of Christmas magic.

In the countdown to Christmas, there’s no better way to experience London at its most magical than on an open-top bus tour. In this London Christmas lights bus tour review, I will share what to expect as well as some top tips and highlights!

This iconic tour is a festive favourite that has been on my Christmas list for a while, and it didn’t disappoint. From the moment we boarded at Green Park, just steps from the world-famous Ritz Hotel, the excitement was electric.

For the best views, I recommend sitting on the open-top upper deck. The tour glides through London’s famous streets at a leisurely pace, offering plenty of photo opportunities and thousands of sparkling lights. It’s the perfect mix of sightseeing and soaking up the city’s sensational winter displays – all from the comfort of your seat.

As we admired glittering decorations and fabulous façades, our guide shared fascinating facts about London’s landmarks. A highlight for me was seeing up close the impressive Spirit of Christmas angel lights in Regent Street, and the fun, festive atmosphere onboard.

Top tips

  • Arrive early: Allow plenty of time to find the bus and secure your seat.
  • Book a seat on the Upper Deck: Sit in the open seating area for the best views.
  • Dress warmly: It can get cold on the Upper Deck, dress for the winter weather.
