    Sir John Soane's Museum WC2A 3BP[map]

    The furniture and fixtures in Sir John Soane's Museum represents a rare survival of ordinary domestic furniture of the early 19th century - the set of kitchen chairs and small domestic items such as book carriers being especially rare. The patent Kitchen range dating (1812) is thought by the kitchen historian Peter Brears to be unique. There are also many pieces designed by Soane and made for him by John Robins and other makers - including desks and unusual tables incorporating portfolio cabinets, drawers and cupboards. The bookcases in the Library-Dining Room, incorporating stained glass, and those in the Picture Room inlaid with ebony, are especially fine.

Museum volunteers regularly deliver free talks in the Hunterian Museum. These cover a wide range of subjects relating to the museum collections and the history of surgery.

     
  • Heroes of Our Time: Rwandan Courage & Survival

    A history of the 1994 Rwandan genocide that focuses on the situation in Rwanda today through the stories of four heroic survivors: �Sim� Karamaga, Daphrose Mukangarambe, Cassien Mbanda and Ange Cendrine Mukayitesi. Through personal testimony, imagery and film, the exhibition conveys the history of Rwanda, setting the context as to how the colonial years sowed the seeds for the genocide in which one million Tutsis, and a number of moderate Hutus, were killed in 100 days. The exhibition also focuses on the need to ensure that the voices of survivors are listened to and heard, memory is kept alive, victims of the genocide are never forgotten and survivors of the genocide are supported.

    Hunterian Museum - Museums of the Royal College of Surgeons of England WC2A 3PE[map]

    Today the College has an extensive collection of about 7,000 historical surgical and dental instruments. These include instrument sets dating back to the 17th century, as well as a large number of instruments from the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The collection contains instruments used, modified or donated by a number of famous surgeons including Benjamin Brodie, William Fergusson and William Macewen. Amongst the most important are include some of Lister's prototype carbolic sprays and samples of the catgut ligatures which Joseph Lister developed, as well as microscope and glass vessels used in experiments on fermentation.

    Hunterian Museum - Museums of the Royal College of Surgeons of England WC2A 3PE[map]

    In 1799 the government purchased the collection of the surgeon and anatomist John Hunter FRS (1728-1793). The Hunterian Collection today contains approximately 3,500 specimens and preparations from John Hunter's original collection. The collection still includes many of Hunter's most famous specimens, including those showing his successful ligation of the femoral artery for popliteal aneurysm and his experiments on collateral circulation.
