Courtauld Institute of Art WC2R 0RN[map]
Over more than two decades, the Getty Conservation Institute (GCI) has undertaken long-term collaborative projects with partner organizations in many parts of the world. Though often beset by problems of cultural and language difficulties, these have succeeded in the objectives, even while not achieving their full potential. Four projects will be presented in brief; the China Principles, (national guidelines for the conservation and management of heritage sites) and their application at the Mogao Grottoes of Dunhuang; the Southern African Rock Art Project, conducted over the past six years at the World Heritage sites of Mapungubwe on the border of South Africa, Botswana and Zimbabwe, and in the Clanwilliam Wilderness Area, South Africa; the conservation of the 3.6 million year-old Laetoli hominid trackway site in Tanzania; and aspects of the Institute’s project for the conservation of the tomb of Tutankhamen in the Valley of the Kings, Egypt.

New Dance Commissions at Royal Opera House
From
£7.00
(CAD10.95)Ballet29 March 2012 to 31 March 2012
Royal Opera House WC2E 9DD[map]
New Dance Commissions from Laïla Diallo, Sarah Dowling and Freddie Opoku-Addaie. The talented, young choreographers are unified through the use of striking imagery to explore the contemporary world through dance, film, craft and objects. Although still in development, the new pieces already promise an intriguing insight into aspects of contemporary society and a fresh perspective on dance. Diallo, formerly a dancer with Wayne McGregor’s Random Dance, uses newly composed live music and a small group of dancers to explore the theme of migration and transience – leaving, arriving, letting go and holding dear. Dowling, a choreographer in theatre and film as well as one of the original Punchdrunk performers, explores isolation and human communication with a science fiction edge. Opoku-Addaie, artistic director of Jagged Antics and twice Place Prize finalist, looks at the mechanisms of traditional craft techniques, exploring inherited processes of the handmade and how manual precision can shape its own narrative.
