Can such now familiar images as Le Déjeuner sur l'herbe, Olympia and A Bar at the Folies-Bergère be seen as the revolutionary beginnings of modern art. The painting of Edouard Manet presents a paradox, clearly deriving from an academically approved Old Master tradition and yet breaking down so many barriers of style and taste that, deeply controversial in its time, it became a major source of influence on the development of Impressionism. This talk looks at the range of Manet’s work, discussing his capacity to absorb and transform the masterworks (by artists such as Titian and Velázquez) that inspired him and examining his radical use of contemporary subject matter.
