What is Stonehenge?
A ring of giant rocks that form a prehistoric monument, Stonehenge is a world-famous Unesco World Heritage Site estimated to be more than 5,000 years old. The origins of the structure are unknown, but there are many theories surrounding how it came to be: a burial ground, a place of worship and the most popular, an ancient observatory to mark midsummer. Take a visit, hear its story and uncover the ancient secrets of this fascinating monument.
Where is Stonehenge?
Stonehenge is located on Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire, England, about 90 miles (145km) west of London.
What will I see on the Simply Stonehenge tour?
The iconic Stonehenge stone structures
Upon arrival, you are free to explore the site at your leisure. Take a stroll around the impressive stone structure, then learn about the attraction's origins and the fascinating history of Salisbury Plain where Stonehenge proudly sits. Additionally, you can visit the remarkable Unesco World Heritage Site’s exhibition and visitor centre, where you will uncover the story of the stones, the land and its people through audiovisual experiences.
Unesco World Heritage Site’s exhibition
The centre boasts more than 250 archaeological objects and treasures recovered from the surrounding landscape, ranging from jewellery and tools to ancient human remains. You can also find temporary exhibitions throughout the year such as the “Your Stonehenge” exhibition, which features a collection of the public's personal photos from their visits to the site during the past 150 years.
Lithodomos Ancient World multimedia guide
Enhance your visit with a Lithodomos Ancient World multimedia guide, which offers a 360-degree reconstruction of the site (it can be selected at checkout under Stonehenge Augmented Reality). This virtual guide uses interactive, self-guiding maps that share stories, myths and legends of this historic spot, bringing Stonehenge to life. This guide transports you to a sunny mid-afternoon in England, where you can travel through four periods of Stonehenge's long history.
