Since the release of the iconic romcom featuring Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts, Notting Hill has become a popular destination for film fans and tourists. Believe it or not, this pretty neighbourhood is not only about the famous The Travel Book Co shop where Hugh and Juila fell in love, and the iconic blue door (which was removed and was sold at auction at Christie's!). You’ll also find plenty of pretty spots to make your Instagram feed pop!
One of Notting Hill’s most distinctive features is the beauty of the colourful pastel houses which can be found along Portobello Road – or around any corner you look really! These houses attract photographers from all over London and have turned Notting Hill into one the most popular neighbourhoods among Instagrammers.
Want to know a little secret? There’s a colourful road that’s well hidden where you can see some of the prettiest houses in this hood without quite so much hustle and bustle. This road is right opposite Notting Hill Gate Tube station and is called Hillgate Place, and we are sure you will fall in love with it instantly!
Notting Hill Carnival
One of the most exciting events in Notting Hill is the annual Notting Hill Carnival at the end of August. It’s London’s biggest street party and fills the streets of west London with Caribbean colours, music and flavours.
You'll see extravagant floats and performers in vibrant costumes (to match the colourful houses!) dancing through the streets in the carnival parade, all this while stopping at all the tempting food stalls along the route. After hearing all of this, we’re sure you can’t wait to join the carnival!
If you want to make the most of this incredible street party, be sure to grab your camera, arrive early and find a front-row spot along the main route so you and your friends don’t miss the best exhibitions for the perfect Instagram snap.
Notting Hill has some of the cosiest and most picturesque cafes in London, making it perfect for tourists exploring the area and locals just looking for a nice cuppa.
Farm Girl on Portobello Road serves delicious food and its Rose Latte is definitely worth a try. It’s a photo-worthy double-shot latte with rose water infused with milk and rose petals. Also worth a mention is the Insta-famous Biscuiteers icing cafe, where you can enjoy a nice cappuccino with a choice of cakes, cupcakes and chocolates – perfect for an Instagram flat lay!
Best for backdrops
Nowhere in London features more Insta-worthy backdrops than Notting Hill. One of the most interesting (and well hidden!) ones are in Codrington Mews. These are the home of XL Recordings, and the studio’s walls are covered with the artwork from Thom Yorke’s The Eraser album, while the front features the art of The XX’s Coexist. Pretty cool, right?
But the award for the prettiest mews in London definitely goes to St Luke’s Mews, where every house is painted in pretty pink. This is where Keira Knightley lives in Love Actually, and every year couples from all over the world visit to get engaged!
Portobello Road Market
Portobello Road Market is one of the most characteristic features of Notting Hill. Portobello is really several markets in one. Saturday is the busiest day where you can find more than 100 stands selling food, fashion accessories, household goods, vintage clothing and almost anything else you can think of!
When visiting the market, keep your eyes open for Alice’s, the prettiest vintage shop you will ever see, which is located right in the heart of the market. On a sunny day, there are also some talented and bizarre street performers to be spotted too, making the experience even more unique.
