What is Les Misérables about?

Set in 1800s France, Les Misérables theatre production tells the story of former prisoner Jean Valjean who is hunted for decades by the ruthless policeman Javert after breaking his parole. An epic journey set against the backdrop of the French Revolution and social upheaval, Jean Valjean finds himself an outcast after spending 19 years in prison for stealing bread and attempting several escapes, now constantly on the run. Freedom has a bitter taste for him, as doors close due to his status as a former convict. Old habits die hard, making it a struggle for a repeat offender to get by.

Jean Valjean's tragedy and fight against corruption is intertwined with other stories bringing to the central stage social problems that go beyond borders. The story also revolves around Fantine, a young woman abandoned by her former lover Félix Tholomyès. She is forced into prostitution to pay off her debts and her daughter Cosette is left in the care of a corrupt innkeeper.
