Amadeus, Peter Shaffer’s iconic play about the rivalry between composers Antonio Salieri and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, returns to London starring Michael Sheen as Salieri and Callum Scott Howells as Mozart.

Set against some of the greatest music ever written, this gripping story explores ambition, faith, genius and jealousy as one man is forced to confront a talent he can never better.

The major revival comes to the Noël Coward Theatre for a limited run from 17 April to 7 August 2027.

What is Amadeus about?

It’s 1820 in Vienna, and respected composer Antonio Salieri comes to a stark realisation: he may no longer be the best.

He has everything you might expect from a such a celeberated creator – status, fame and success – but everything changes when he meets his prodigy, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Utterly brilliant but vulgar and childish, Mozart possesses a talent that Salieri believes could only be divine. As admiration turns to jealousy and obsession, he is forced to confront a rival he cannot better.

Peter Shaffer’s play returns to London in a major revival at the Noël Coward Theatre, exploring the rivalry between two very different men and the devastating lengths one might go to in order to come out on top.

Here, he steps into the role of Salieri, the accomplished composer whose world is turned upside down by Mozart’s genius.

With Callum Scott Howells as Mozart, the production brings together two acclaimed Welsh actors for a meeting of two legendary characters. Expect a dramatic exploration of ambition, faith and rivalry, accompanied by some of Mozart’s best-known music.

Who is in the Amadeus cast?

The Amadeus London cast is led by Michael Sheen (The Queen, Good Omens) as Antonio Salieri. One of Wales’ most recognisable actors, Sheen has built an acclaimed career across stage and screen, taking on an impressively diverse range of roles. He has a particularly special connection to Amadeus, having previously played Mozart in a 1998 production of the play, earning an Olivier Award nomination for Best Supporting Performance in 1999.

Opposite him is Callum Scott Howells as Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Howells made a huge impression on audiences with his performance as Colin in the critically aclaimed Channel 4 drama It’s a Sin, and has since showcased his range on stage in Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club.

Together, Sheen and Howells take on the legendary roles at the centre of Peter Shaffer’s celebrated drama.
