After delighting theatregoers during its sold-out season at the National Theatre, the smash-hit Pride The Musical is transferring to The Bridge Theatre this winter.

Pride The New Musical has already received roaring applause and is set to take theatregoers on a joy-filled journey this November, telling the remarkable story of two communities coming together at a time when there was little joy to be found during the 1984 miners' strikes.

What is Pride The Musical about?

Pride The Musical takes audiences back to the summer of 1984, as the country is in turmoil and the government is waging a war against the coal industry, leading thousands of miners to strike. At the same time, Britain is facing growing fear around the AIDS crisis, while activist Mark Ashton sets out to connect two communities facing hostility across the country: Welsh miners and London LGBTQ+ activists.

What begins as an unlikely partnership sees the LGBTQ+ activists form the Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners campaign, raising much-needed money for the striking miners. With seemingly little in common apart from the adversity they are facing, the two communities come together in a story of friendship, hope and resilience.

The new musical brings to the stage the true story that inspired the award-winning 2014 film Pride.

The musical reunites the film's original playwright Stephen Beresford (The Last of the Haussmans) and director Matthew Warchus (Matilda The Musical) to tell this extraordinary story of ordinary people coming together and taking their future into their own hands. At its heart, it is a joyful celebration of the power of communities when united behind the same goal, while also telling a touching story of friendship and hope.

Adding to the story is an original score by Christopher Nightingale (A Christmas Carol), Josh Cohen and DJ Walde (Sylvia), with songs drawing on the music of the protests as well as pop, rock, disco and the Welsh choral tradition.

Who is in the cast?

Some of the cast of Pride The Musical has already been confirmed for The Bridge Theatre transfer, including Samuel Barnett, reprising his role as Jonathan, alongside original cast members Matthew Durkan as Mike, Gillian Elisa as Gwen, Chris Jenkins as Gethin and Darren Lawrence as Cliff. Kirsty Malpass plays Hefina, joined by Sarah Pugh as Siân, Caroline Sheen as Maureen, Courtney Stapleton as Steph and Matthew Woodyatt as Dai.

Pride The Musical is showing at The Bridge Theatre, a London venue sitting on the banks of the Thames in Potters Fields Park (SE1 2SG), which is right next to the iconic Tower Bridge and enjoys sweeping views of the Tower of London and the City. 

How to get there:

• Underground – The nearest Tube stations are London Bridge (Northern and Jubilee lines) and Tower Hill (District and Circle lines), which are both around a 10-minute walk from the venue.
• Bus – The following buses stop nearby: 42, 47, 78, 343, 381.
• Cycle – Hire a Santander Cycles bike and ride direct to the Bridge Theatre. Docking stations can be found within walking distance of the venue on Tooley Street, Snowfields and Curlew Street.

When is Pride The Musical showing in London?

Evening performances take place on Mondays to Saturdays at 7.30pm and matinees are on Thursdays and Saturdays at 2.30pm.
