What is the Million Dollar Quartet musical about?

On 4 December 1956, record producer Sam Phillips, known as the “Father of Rock ‘n’ Roll”, brought together Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and Elvis Presley at Sun Record Studios in Memphis.

What starts as a recording session quickly turns into an impromptu jam session when Elvis drops by the studio, followed by Johnny Cash. As the four musicians play together, their talent, ambition and rivalries come to the surface, creating a night that would go down in music history.

The musical recreates that legendary session and the story behind how four of the biggest names in rock ‘n’ roll found themselves in the same room, performing together for the first and only time.

The Million Dollar Quartet (musical) was nominated for three Tony Awards during its Broadway run, winning Best Featured Actor in a Musical. Who is in the cast?

The Million Dollar Quartet cast is led by Darren Day as Sam Phillips, the record producer who played a key role in bringing the four musicians together. Day is best known for starring as Joseph in the original production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat, as well as his many stage and television appearances.

Rather than having musicians perform separately in the orchestra pit, the cast of Million Dollar Quartet also play their instruments live on stage, recreating the energy of the original artists and the spontaneous feel of the 1956 recording session.
