What is The Little Match Girl about?

Inspired by Hans Christian Andersen's beloved fairy tale, The Little Match Girl follows Fiammetta on Christmas Eve as she wanders the snow-covered streets of a small Italian town, trying to sell matches in the bitter cold.

As the night draws on and the temperature drops, Fiammetta has little choice but to light her final match to keep warm. As its glow illuminates her face, she drifts into a dreamlike world where hunger and hardship fade away, replaced by memories of warmth, hope and happier times.

Arthur Pita's acclaimed adaptation is both heartwarming and deeply moving, blending humour with poignant storytelling. Along her journey, Fiammetta encounters both cruelty and compassion, while beautifully choreographed ballet sequences capture the emotions she’s grappling with.

What to expect from Arthur Pita's adaptation of The Little Match Girl

First performed in 2013, Arthur Pita's acclaimed adaptation has enjoyed five successful festive seasons at Sadler's Wells before touring across the UK and internationally. The production was also honoured with the 2025 Hans Christian Andersen Award in Odense.

Now a much-loved Christmas classic, The Little Match Girl combines powerful storytelling with striking choreography and live music in the unique setting of Wilton's Music Hall, one of London's most atmospheric historic venues.

Alongside Arthur Pita's bold and inventive choreography, Frank Moon's original live score plays a central role in the production. The multi-instrumentalist shifts between melancholy, joy and mischief, with the music reflecting Fiammetta's emotional journey, while Italian songs and commedia dell'arte influences add to the magic on stage.

Who is in the cast?

The Little Match Girl ballet is directed and choreographed by Arthur Pita, with original music by Frank Moon and set and costume design by Yann Seabra.

Casting for the 2026 London production has yet to be announced.
