What is The Sinatra Musical about?
Opening on New Year’s Eve 1942, Sinatra The Musical follows a young Frank Sinatra on the brink of superstardom – as he gives a performance at New York’s Paramount Theatre that changes music history forever. As his career skyrockets, Sinatra struggles to balance family life with fame, temptation and public scrutiny.
When a turbulent romance with Hollywood star Ava Gardner sends his career into decline, the singer is forced to fight his way back, staging one of the greatest comebacks in show business history.
Featuring more than 20 timeless hits, including That’s Life, One for My Baby, The Best Is Yet To Come and Come Fly With Me, the show charts the rise, fall and revival of one of America’s most iconic performers.
As explained by Tina Sinatra, daughter of the artist, “My dad wasn’t just singing songs – he was recording an emotional diary of his life. These classic songs form the heart of Sinatra The Musical, revealing a more intimate portrait of the man behind the legend.”
The London Sinatra Musical is brought to life by a stellar team of creatives including two-time Tony award-winning writer Joe DiPietro (Memphis, What’s New Pussycat?) with decorated director and choreographer Kathleen Marshall, who boasts three Tony wins (Anything Goes, Kiss Me, Kate and The Panama Game). The production also features Olivier Award-winning set design by Peter McKintosh and a live 17-piece orchestra supervised by Gareth Valentine.
Why you should see Sinatra The Musical at the Aldwych Theatre
From blockbuster films to first dances, Sinatra’s music has become a soundtrack spanning generations. Often cited as the ultimate crooner, his powerful voice and charismatic style cemented his status as one of the world’s best-selling musicians, and his influence continues to shape artists today.
Beyond his musical legacy, Sinatra became a major Hollywood star, winning an Oscar for From Here to Eternity. But his rise was far from simple. Born to immigrant parents in 1915, his personal life was highly publicised, marked by multiple marriages and a reputation as both a romantic and a fiery character.
A complex individual living a high-profile life, Sinatra channelled deep emotion into his music – infusing it with a timeless quality that resonates as strongly now as it did then.
