David Hare’s new play, Grace Pervades, is a mesmerising exploration of theatre legend Henry Irving. Balancing the roles of actor and manager at the Lyceum Theatre, Irving brings the audience to different locations and time periods. The play focuses especially on Irving’s on-and off-stage relationship with actress Ellen Terry.  

Despite their differences, their collaboration on stage for 20 years changed the face of theatre. Worn down by his responsibilities as manager, the actor’s confidence is shaken when Ellen Terry challenges him in a way that no one ever has before. She shows him that the search for perfection on stage is not everything, and that embracing life beyond the stage is at the heart of their craft.

Who is in the cast of Grace Pervades? 

Another theatre giant, Ralph Fiennes – known for playing Voldemort in the Harry Potter films and for winning a Tony for his portrayal of Hamlet – takes on the role of Henry Irving, a titan of Victorian theatre and the first actor to be awarded a knighthood. 

Joining him on stage is Miranda Raison, who plays the graceful Ellen Terry. Recruited by Irving to join his company, Terry was the highest-paid actress in England. This marks Raison's return to the stage after being away for over a decade. She is known for appearing in “The Winter's Tale” opposite Kenneth Branagh and Judi Dench.
