About

Experience a show at one of London's most innovative theatres – the Arcola Theatre is a much-loved institution within the city's theatre scene, known for its pioneering programming.

About Arcola Theatre London

The Arcola Theatre has made a name for itself within the London performing arts scene by hosting one of the largest commissioned programmes of original works, as well as bold and new interpretations of established classics.

Its programme showcases international talent all year long, providing opportunities for young talent to develop through a wide variety of programmes – from youth theatre to various community groups – creating opportunities for local communities. It also strives to make world-class performances accessible to new audiences.

The Arcola Theatre is committed to becoming the first carbon-neutral theatre. This project was initiated in 2007, placing sustainability at the heart of the Arcola's operations. Since then, it has reduced its carbon footprint through the use of renewable energy.

What is the history of Arcola Theatre?

The Arcola opened its doors for the first time in 2000 under the artistic direction of Mehmet Ergen, who also co-founded the Southwark Playhouse in 1993. Together with Leyla Nazli, he transformed an old textile factory in Dalston, East London, into a fringe theatre.

In 2007, Arcola launched Grimeborn, an annual opera festival held every August. It showcases innovative interpretations of classic works and makes opera accessible to all at a fraction of the usual price.

Notable productions include Mojo Mickey, written by Owen McCafferty, which later transferred to the Trafalgar Theatre in the West End.

Overall, Arcola London's intimate studio setting provides audiences with a different theatre experience to that found in the West End. The close proximity to the stage, coupled with innovative stage production, makes for a highly immersive experience.

What’s on at Arcola Theatre

The Arcola's programme features a variety of innovative productions year after year, so make sure to buy your tickets in advance for one of them.

Previous productions staged there have included the thrilling The Poltergeist by Philip Ridley, which premiered in 2022 and returned for another run in 2025. Other notable productions include The Visitors, a play by Barney Norris with powerful writing and staging, which received widespread acclaim from critics and won major Off West End awards. Another celebrated production was The Pandora's Box by Ade Solanke, which was praised for bringing new voices and diversity to the stage.
