Just announced to land in the London West End for its world premiere, Nanny McPhee the Musical is set to  bring the much-loved story to the stage for the first time as a musical. The new production is written by Emma Thompson, who played the iconic nanny in the 2005 film adaptation and wrote its original screenplay.

Based on the film and inspired by Christianna Brand's Nurse Matilda books, the Nanny McPhee musical will bring a little magic, plenty of mischief and one very unconventional nanny to the stage.

What is Nanny McPhee the Musical about?

Meet Nanny McPhee, a no-nonsense nanny who arrives at the Brown family's Victorian London home armed with a magical walking stick and some rather unconventional methods.

The seven Brown children have already managed to drive away 17 nannies, leaving their father desperately searching for someone who can bring some much-needed order to the household. But Nanny McPhee soon discovers that this is no ordinary family, with a baby who will stop at nothing, a mischievous group of children and even an out-of-control donkey to deal with. Armed with plenty of magic Nanny McPhee sets out to restore peace to the Brown household. 

What to expect from Nanny McPhee the Musical in London

The Nanny McPhee London production is set to bring the magical world of the original story to the stage, combining the heartwarming tale audiences know and love with music, theatrical illusion and plenty of mischievous moments. Fans can expect a whimsical stage adaptation filled with magical stunts and spellbinding effects, bringing Nanny McPhee's extraordinary powers to life in front of a live audience.

Emma Thompson, who starred in and wrote the screenplay for the 2005 film, is writing the book and original lyrics for the musical. She is collaborating with singer-songwriter Gary Clark (Sing Street) to create the music for this new stage adaptation. Speaking about Nanny McPhee, Thompson says: “Theatre feels like her natural home – magic, music, mischief and a good dollop of danger can all happen right in front of you.”

Who is in the cast?

The Nanny McPhee cast for the London production has not yet been confirmed. An early workshop of the musical took place in London in 2018, with Olivia Colman taking part alongside Lily James and Rory Kinnear. However, the performers involved in the workshop are not confirmed as part of the eventual Nanny McPhee West End cast.

The Nanny McPhee musical is set to be directed by Katy Rudd (Ballet Shoes), with set and costume designs by Rob Howell (Olivier Award-winning set designer for Matilda the Musical), choreography by Ellen Kane (Paddington the Musical, Matilda the Musical) and orchestrations by Simon Hale (Get Up Stand Up!).
