About

See Kristin Scott Thomas return to the London West End in a gripping revival and new production of Anton Chekhov's The Cherry Orchard.

Directed by Olivier and Tony Award nominee Ian Rickson, this poignant new adaptation by Conor McPherson brings The Cherry Orchard London play to the Harold Pinter Theatre. A timeless tale and deeply moving portrait of love and loss, the play explores ambition and loyalty as a family struggles to hold on to the past while the world around them begins to change.

The Cherry Orchard London remains one of Chekhov's most celebrated works, and this new West End production is sure to capture the hearts of theatregoers this winter.

What is The Cherry Orchard about?

The Cherry Orchard is Anton Chekhov's final play, a poignant tragicomedy set in Russia at the turn of the 20th century, as the old social order begins to crumble.

Meet Lyubov Ranevskaya as she returns to her childhood home and grand estate after spending several years in France, where she went to grieve the death of her young son, only to find her home and beloved cherry orchard under threat.

She is confronted with a sad reality: the place she once called home and where she built many cherished memories is being sold as the family faces financial pressure. Forced to accept that the world is changing, she must come to terms with a time where aristocratic privilege no longer holds the same force and prestige. In her absence, the family estate and finances have fallen into decline. Merchant Lopakhin, the son of a former peasant and now in charge of the estate, proposes auctioning it to pay off the family's mounting debts, including the beloved cherry orchard.

Dismissed at first, and forced to take on further loans, the family attempts to hold on to what remains of their past glories, only to face the harsh reality of letting go of the family home they cherished dearly, as old loyalties and new ambitions rise amid a period of great social change.

Why see The Cherry Orchard in London?

First performed in Moscow in 1904, The Cherry Orchard is Chekhov's final and arguably most celebrated play. Alongside The Seagull, Uncle Vanya and Three Sisters, it is regarded as one of the playwright's greatest works and remains one of his most frequently revived work. Balancing tragedy with moments of humour and farce, the play explores universal themes of family, loss and social change that continue to resonate with audiences today.

This new London production of The Cherry Orchard reunites celebrated director Ian Rickson with acclaimed playwright Conor McPherson, while BAFTA and Olivier Award-winning actress Kristin Scott Thomas leads the cast in one of Chekhov's most iconic roles.

Who is in the cast?
