About

A new stage adaptation of the Oscar-winning film, The Lives of Others, comes to London's Adelphi Theatre for a strictly limited West End run this autumn.

Directed by Olivier Award winner Robert Icke, the startling play brings Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck's story of surveillance, paranoia and human connection to life in a gripping new stage adaptation.

Keira Knightley returns to the London stage for the first time in 15 years alongside Luke Thompson and Stephen Dillane in one of this season's most anticipated new plays.

What is The Lives of Others about?

Set in 1984 Cold War East Berlin, The Lives of Others follows novelist Georg Dreyman and his partner, actress Christa-Maria Sieland, whose lives come under constant surveillance by the Stasi, East Germany's secret police.

Watching from the attic above their apartment is Gerd Wiesler, an officer tasked with monitoring every conversation through hidden microphones. As Wiesler becomes increasingly absorbed in the couple's lives, it becomes clear that every whispered word can have deadly consequences, leading him to question both his orders and the regime he serves.

As the operation takes its course, it becomes clear that the state’s power extends beyond censorship and freedom of speech, showing how fragile those freedoms can be.

Why The Lives of Others is a must-see in London's West End

The thought-provoking thriller brings Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck’s Oscar-winning 2007 film, The Lives of Others, to the London stage for the first time, adapted by Olivier Award-winning director Robert Icke (Oedipus, Oresteia, Romeo & Juliet).

The stage adaptation, featuring an all-star cast led by Keira Knightley, explores the relationship between arts and politics, and how state censorship and surveillance shape private lives. Blending psychological drama with historical events, it asks powerful questions about morality, empathy and the consequences of state control.

Who is in the cast?

Luke Thompson, previously seen in Bridgerton and Dunkirk as well as Shakespeare's Globe's A Midsummer Night's Dream, stars as writer Georg Dreyman.

Academy Award nominee Keira Knightley plays actress Christa-Maria Sieland, following acclaimed screen roles in Black Doves, Pride & Prejudice and The Imitation Game.

Tony and Olivier Award-winning actor Stephen Dillane, known for his role in The Real Thing, takes on the role of officer Gerd Wiesler.
