About

The outrageous and mischievous Avenue Q is back in London’s West End, delighting audiences with its unforgettable songs and hilarious puppetry.

The multi-award-winning show, created by the team behind The Book of Mormon, parodies much-loved children’s puppet show Sesame Street. But it’s not all light-hearted fun, as it follows young adults in downtown New York grappling with life's challenges.

What is the plot of the Avenue Q musical?

Guess Q’s back?

Full of mischief and mishaps, Avenue Q sees your favourite larger-than-life characters return to New York. Join them as they navigate adulthood, from finding their purpose to answering life's burning questions.

Meet Princeton, a college graduate who arrives in the Big Apple with big dreams, high hopes and only a few dollars in his bank account. He moves into a shabby apartment on Avenue Q, where he meets a colourful bunch of neighbours: Kate the girl next door, Lucy the party girl, Rod the Republican, Trekkie the internet entrepreneur, and Gary Coleman, the superintendent (yes, the real one!).

Together, they embark on a coming-of-age journey, as they get jobs and navigate big-city life. They even tackle feelings that feel pretty grown up. With its catchy musical score and brilliant puppeteering, Avenue Q has already become one of the biggest West End hits in 2026, providing big laughs and gut-busting moments galore.

Why you should see Avenue Q in London at Shaftesbury Theatre

The Avenue Q musical is no ordinary puppet show, using laugh-out-loud stories to explore serious issues such as housing issues, job hunting and emotional turmoil. Featuring puppetry and a musical score by The Book of Mormon collaborators Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx, it includes showstoppers such as What Do You Do with a B.A. in English? and It Sucks to Be Me, as well as other songs that blend humour and shock.

Combining adult themes with heartfelt puppetry and hilarious moments, the show has seen groundbreaking success since it premiered in 2003, most notably earning the production triple crown at the 2004 Tony Awards for Best Musical, Best Score and Best Book.

The Avenue Q musical in London first opened in 2006, at the Noël Coward Theatre, closing in 2009 after more than 1,179 performances. It then moved to the Wyndham's Theatre, for a short run until 2010, but returned in 2024 with the Avenue Q London Concert to mark the show’s 18th anniversary.

Avenue Q is delighting audiences with its long-awaited comeback in 2026, featuring a talented cast of actors and puppeteers bringing one of the best loved musicals back to the West End.
