About
Watch the stage adaptation of Ivanov, a comic drama and revival of a classic Chekhov play, coming to London for a strictly limited summer run at the Bridge Theatre in 2027.
Follow Ivanov's journey as he questions whether happiness will ever befall him while his world continues to fall apart. Will he find the strength to overcome melancholy and turn his life around?
What is the plot of Ivanov?
Ivanov is caught in a cycle of questioning whether he was ever happy, has forgotten how to be happy, or is simply experiencing burnout. The lines between reality and perception are blurred as he wonders if he will ever find happiness again. At this stage of life, he should be settled - married to the perfect woman and enjoying a successful career. But debts are mounting and his wife seems to have caught a strange, unexplained illness.
He heads to a party at the Lebedevs', hoping to escape his problems and rediscover his passion for life. Instead, he drifts from party to party, running from the void in his life, which ultimately leads to an affair.
Can Ivanov save his marriage, or will he lose everything he has built over the past decades?
Why see Ivanov in London
Ivanov, Anton Chekhov’s 19th-century drama, first took the stage in 1887. Originally commissioned as a comedy, Chekhov wrote the play in just ten days as a four-act drama he was unhappy with. He later revised it, and the final version was met with success and has since seen many revivals around the world. The play was last performed on London’s West End in 2008, with Kenneth Branagh in the lead role.
Simon Stone, also the director behind another Bridge Theatre production this season – The Lady From the Sea – brings a bold new reimagining of Chekhov’s classic. Stone is known for his daring approach to classical texts, blending modernity and history in inventive ways. His interpretation of Ivanov, with Chris Pine in the starring role, is set to redefine Chekhov's play, and is certain to capture both public and critical attention in 2027.
Who stars in Ivanov?
Chris Pine, previously seen in Star Trek and Wonder Woman, makes his London debut in this daring new production of Ivanov. Bringing the complex character of Ivanov to life, this marks his first time on a live stage in over a decade.
The other cast members are yet to be announced.
