Transport for London (TfL) has unveiled an innovative new Tube map in collaboration with the Music Venue Trust, Featured Artist Coalition and Universal Music. Released as part of TfL’s 25th anniversary celebrations, the Grassroots Music Tube map reimagines Harry Beck’s iconic design into a vibrant network that highlights London’s music scene and world-renowned grassroots music culture.

What is the Grassroots Music Tube map?

The special edition map transforms the capital’s network with audio cables replacing the Tube lines, alongside playful touches like the key to the lines repurposed as a setlist. The city-wide initiative champions historic venues – such as 42 Oakley Street, Abbey Road Studios and Battersea Power Station – that have launched the careers of icons like Coldplay, Raye, Queen and Charli XCX.

Staple Tube lines including the Bakerloo and Central lines have stations swapped for songs and genres – think A Rainy Night in Soho and Techno – while the Victoria line represents subcultures such as the Teddy Boys. On the map, you’ll also find record shops including Rough Trade East and Nextdoor Records highlighted alongside iconic nightclubs like Heaven, Ministry of Sound and Dalston Superstore.

London has recorded a 40 per cent uptick in music tourists since 2022, and music tourism now generates £2.8 billion for the capital’s economy. Meanwhile, a staggering seven of the top 10 biggest-selling albums of 2024 were from artists who made their name in the capital. Yet, in 2025, only 179 grassroots venues remain in London. The campaign serves a reminder of the importance of nurturing and protecting these iconic spaces.
