Head to east London for a taste of the Middle East, where smoked meats are grilled on the ferocious managal and strong flavours combine in delicious mezze.
Inspired by cooking techniques and flavours from the Middle East, North African and the Ottoman region, this relaxed eatery dishes out traditional kofte, shawarma, chops and steaks, which have first been smoked before being finished off on the mangal.
Inventive vegetable dishes such as burnt beets with hazelnut dukkah, and coal-baked celeriac, plus mezze dips with grilled pitta complete the authentic offering.

The goods: My food was surprisingly good, I had the cauliflower shawarma, which initially felt like a bit of a ripoff at £12, getting you "just" a whole, un-cut head of cauliflower. But it was delicious, and didn't have the somewhat overly buttery taste that it sometimes can have. With a delicious sauce and pomegranate on top I enjoyed every bite. (I can't explain it - it was just goood)
Clearly, food from the Mediterranean is in right now. New, chic spots are opening up all throughout London, and if Berber & Q is an example of it, I hope this trend continues.
This is a cool, dark, spot in the railway arches. It's usually packed and they don't take reservations. They also won't sit you until all your party has arrived, so just be aware of that.

Lively atmosphere with friendly staff and tasty food. Started off with a Sultan of Swing and Snake Charmer cocktails then tasted mixed pickles, Cauliflower shawarma, Smoked aubergine, tahini, tomato, walnut & burnt lemon, Green chermoula chicken thighs, Cured filfel chuma lamb chops. more
Had a ridiculously long wait here on a Saturday evening, half an hour became an hour which became 90 mins. The wait was eventaully almost 2 hours. Even then the staff wouldn't give us an empty table of 4 bt squeezed the 4 of us onto the end of another table. The food is delicious but it's also quite loud and quite dark. I thought the prices were OK as the portions are good. I would have... more
Very good veg options. Lackluster service so I took off the discretionary tip.
Now to be more specific, I had the enormous hunk of charred hispi cabbage with harissa creme fraiche and the (enormous) cauliflower schawarma with tahini and rose. First of all, large portion sizes for tapas which is a plus. Second, very good flavours. The crunchy sea salt complemented the smoky cabbage and the... more
