Beyond London: Yorkshire

With cosmopolitan cities, amazing open spaces and interesting industrial heritage, Yorkshire has something for everyone.

The county boasts 1,000 square miles of National Park – including the Peak District, the Yorkshire Dales and the North York Moors – making it the perfect destination for walkers. There's also a gorgeous coastline, with popular seaside resorts such as Whitby and Scarborough.

The city of Leeds is fantastic for shopping and nightlife, with attractions including the Royal Armouries; stately home Harewood House; and Leeds City Art Gallery, where you can see work by Henry Moore and Antony Gormley.

In historic York, you can visit the magnificent medieval minster, the Yorkshire Wheel, and the interactive National Railway Museum. Stop off at Betty's Café Tea Rooms to enjoy tea and cakes accompanied by live piano music.

Other must-see Yorkshire attractions include the Magna Science Adventure Centre in Rotherham, the Millennium Galleries in Sheffield, the huge Meadowhall shopping centre on the outskirts of Sheffield, and the National Coal Mining Museum near Wakefield.
