Japanese Museums and Galleries

There's a wealth of Japanese art and artefacts all over London. Here is our pick of the places to feast your eyes on some real treasures. The last 4 in the list are well off the beaten track but certainly deserve a visit.

The Japanese Galleries at the British Museum - Japan from Prehistory to the Present

The recently refurbished Japanese Galleries at the British Museum tell the remarkable story of this nation from the years before 1200 through medieval and Edo Japan to the modern day.

Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A)

In Room 45 of the V&A you can discover a world of treasures from Japan including swords and armour, netsuke (small carvings), wood-block prints, textiles, lacquer, ceramics and other articles used for the tea ceremony.

Asia House

Asia House celebrates and promotes the varied cultures of Asia. It regularly holds talks, exhibitions, workshops, film screenings, performances, book launches, fashion shows and breakfasts with Asian politicians.

Fan Museum

Well off the beaten track, the wonderful Fan Museum at Greenwich is one of only 2 museums in the world devoted to fans. There are over 200 in the Japanese style.

Soseki Museum

The little-known Soseki Museum is devoted to the life and works of the Japanese novelist Natsume Soseki.

Brunei Gallery, SOAS

At the Brunei Gallery of the University of London's School of Oriental and African Studies, you'll find peace and quiet at the rooftop Japanese garden designed in 2001 - a haven in the middle of Central London.

Horniman Museum

Down in Forest Hill, South London, you'll find the superb Horniman Museum, which has a permanent collection of Japanese fans and artefacts.
