As the young, educated Chinese prospered in the 1980s and 1990s, they moved from Chinatown to Croydon and Colindale. Since then, Chinatown has no longer been a residential area, but, with its many Chinese shops, restaurants and services, has been transformed to become a tourist attraction and a cultural focal point for London's Chinese community.
Currently, almost half of the Chinese population lives in inner London, and around 20% is spread between the three boroughs of Barnet, Southwark and Westminster. Chinese people form more than 2% of the population in Barnet, City, and Westminster.
