Some of London's best gay bars lie south of the river.
Where to start? Upbeat and edgy Brixton, or smart Clapham; it's worth venturing south of the river to check out some of London's top party venues!
Barcode Vauxhall
Vauxhall's Barcode attracts a similar muscle-clad older gentleman to its Soho namesake, but with an altogether more dramatic backdrop – with a vast, light-filled bar up front and a sexier, dancier vibe out back.
The Bird in Hand
Boyz and especially dykes get down and drrrrty at high-energy discos at this increasingly popular bar. The beer garden at The Bird in Hand is one of the biggest in the area.
The Brewery Tap
The Brewery Tap, Stockwell's best gay pub (Stockwell's ONLY gay pub) is a lovely little community deep in South London that hosts awesome barbecues in summer, as well as quiz and karaoke nights. Just don't get drunk and fall in the pond.
Ego at the Southern Pride
There are no big egos here, but size isn't everything (apparently). Touting itself as South London's premier gay and lesbian nightspot, Ego at the Southern Pride brings them in in droves with cabaret, disco, karaoke and chill-out nights.
The Fort
Sleaze reigns supreme here. When folk head off into the darkroom, it's unlikely that they're planning to develop their holiday snaps. Popular with the older crowd, The Fort boasts a good range of beers and wines.
The Fountain Inn
Fun practically drips off the walls at The Fountain Inn, one of the best gay venues in the Crawley, Gatwick Area. With 2 bars to choose from, plus regular quizzes, pool and fancy-dress nights, there's plenty of fun to be had. Alternatively, chill in the beer garden with a great meal whilst flicking through the free gay press available.
The George and Dragon
Dragons may breathe fire, but drag acts breathe life into this ultra-camp venue. The George and Dragon attracts a good caliber of vocalists and, with a late licence and regular underwear parties, it's happy daze all the way.
The Gladstone Arms
Tiny, intimate and friendly, The Gladstone Arms is like one of those cosy little village pubs your mum and dad used to take you to as a kid. And we've heard there's also a pub band who live upstairs...
Kazbar
With a mish-mash of the camp and the cool, pavement drinking, a late licence and drinking by the light of the moon (or the many glitterballs), there's no excuse not to come and rock the Kazbar!
Man Bar
Lipstick and leather congregate in this sweaty, spontaneous bar where just about anything goes! Man Bar, an all men bar, natch, reaches fever pitch at weekends, when grown men have been known to roam freely in their underpants.
Queen's Head
After an afternoon's shopping on the King's Road in Chelsea, drop in at this unassuming yet friendly Victorian pub. The top tucker at the Queen's Head will soon restore your energy.
The Richmond Arms
It's often standing room only at this boozer, as much of the space is taken up by a dancefloor and a stage, where the spotlight is on performers both pro and am. Both queens and Jack the Lads make up the pack at The Richmond Arms.
The Royal Vauxhall Tavern
From the outside, this pub looks like a regular down-at-heel English boozer. Duckie, SLAGS/Chill Out and The Dame Edna Experience are just some of the nights put on at the legendary Royal Vauxhall Tavern. Inside, you'll be rubbing shoulders with art-scenesters, cabaret artists, a whole lot of bears and probably him from next door.
South Central
Let it all hang out at one of this bar's – wait for it – nude discos! Prepare for hair, though, as bears will be out in spades. If that doesn't sound like your idea of fun, you could call in at South Central on a line dancing night or just sup in the large beer garden. Don't miss the legendary Horse Meat Disco on a Sunday.
The Stag
There's a never a dull moment at this pub, as the mixed crowd takes the proverbial bull by the horns and parties! Conveniently close to Victoria station, The Stag offers cabaret and generous Sunday roasts to perk up the weary after that coach or train journey.
The Two Brewers
You can spend the whole night under one roof at The Two Brewers, as there are 2 large venues in one building. There's cabaret on nearly every night at the fabulous front bar; out the back, you'll find great funky house to shake your thang to.
Ye Rose and Crown
A good place to grab some dinner before visiting the nearby cinema or theatre, Ye Rose and Crown is a laid-back community pub welcoming both straights and gays.
