History of Alexandra Palace
Alexandra Palace, also known as Ally Pally, is one of London’s most iconic historical landmarks, celebrated for its cultural impact and colourful past. Conceived in the 1850s as a “Palace for the People”, it first opened in 1873 and, after a dramatic fire just 16 days later, reopened in 1875. Throughout the Victorian era, it became a destination for public entertainment, hosting exhibitions, concerts and large‑scale events.
In 1936, the BBC elevated the Palace’s global significance by launching high‑definition television broadcasts from the site, securing its place in broadcasting history. Another major fire in 1980 led to extensive restoration, bringing the building back to life.
Today, Alexandra Palace is a vibrant entertainment venue hosting concerts, festivals, ice‑skating and other major events.
