Umu

About Umu

Billed as London’s ‘first true Kyoto restaurant’ Umu specialises in kaiseki cuisine which originates from Japan’s ancient capital, Kyoto. One of the most expensive ways in the world to eat, kaiseki is Japanese cooking at its most refined, defined and designed. Those last three adjectives also best describe Umu’s luxurious look. Dark, rich wood is moodily matched with mirrors and low velvet banquettes. Umu means ‘born of nature’ but there’s nothing natural about the prices. Set kaiseki courses, with or without sushi, start at £65 rising to £135 per person. Classic, modern and warm sushi cost £3 to £6 per piece. Highlights include a teriyaki of tuna belly with yuzu served by attractive kimono-clad waitresses.

I took some business partners to Umu last night (Thursday). The atmosphere was buzzing but not too loud, the service attentive and the food fantastic. Will come back to again.

We have wanted to try Umu for ages, and it didn't disappoint - both the food and setting were exquisite. The foie gras sushi may sound strange but it was amazing! The lunch bento boxes are superb value for money, and we plan to return to try the full kaiseki menu. Service was excellent and unlike many restaurants we felt able to linger and enjoy our tea at the end of the meal.

Food very good, but very tiny portions on tasting menu. We ordered Sake to follow, but were quite often left with empty glasses. Overall a good even if it didn't live up to my high expectations

Good food but very expensive. Toilets were out of use so had to go to building toilets. Just not great value for money.
