The Guinea

About The Guinea

The Guinea restaurant in London’s Mayfair has been a hostelry of one sort or another since the 1400’s and has been a Young’s pub for more than a century. With its classic pub frontage and pretty hanging baskets, its complete lack of gaming machines and piped music, The Guinea is the sort of classic pub and restaurant you thought had disappeared from London. The interior is dark and cosy, with tartan carpets, tobacco-coloured walls, antique prints, white table linens. The steaks are absolutely first rate, all grass fed, aged Scotch beef that you can peruse at the butcher’s counter inside. Besides brilliant grilled steaks, the menu includes award-winning pies, fresh fish and chicken dishes and a very serious wine list. The wait staff are Olympic level and the sommelier is particularly known for his encyclopaedic memory. The Guinea is traditional British dining without pretence or formality.

Plenty of visits to the Guinea for a drink, but never been able to spare time for food. Well, now glad we did. A great meal with first class service. Not a cheap option, but a great steak to share, well cooked. Will be back.

Undoubtedly the best thing about The Guinea is the sommelier. Wonderfully gallic in all respects, he swirls your wine with a diffidence and an aplomb that is hard to characterise. The steak is, of course, extremely good and with a wine list to match, coming here is no hardship. My only plea: they could really do with spacing out the tables a bit. Neighbourly bordering on intimate.

I had not been to The Guinea Grill for about 15 years so it was good to see the changes. What a terrific pub/grill. The menu is 90% beef with a few concessions to non beef eaters. My colleague and I were having our Christmas celebration and we both really enjoyed our filet and sirloin steaks with accompanying bottles of Gigondas. The side dishes are almost irrelevent and the cheese platter just mediocre. The atmosphore of a good mens club, in fact I don't think I saw a woman in the place.
