London's Top Commercial Art Galleries

If you want to browse, and buy, contemporary art, London has some of the best galleries in the world.

Top commercial art galleries exhibit works by world famous modern artists as well as showcasing new and emerging talent.

With exhibits ranging from the brilliant to the bizarre, you're sure to find something to suit your taste in one of London's contemporary art galleries.

As many of the galleries are in unusual suburban locations, it's also a chance to explore bits of London off the usual tourist trail.

Haunch of Venison

One of the art scene's biggest names, you can see a real mix at the Haunch of Venison, from historically important works to newly-commissioned and emerging artists. Housed in the former Museum of Mankind, a gorgeous Georgian townhouse in the West End, the Haunch of Venison is famed for hosting super-sized installations.

White Cube

With its high-profile programme of exhibitions, White Cube in Mason's Yard shows a range of controversial contemporary artists, with works including photography, painting, drawing and sculpture. Damien Hirst, Tracey Emin and Gilbert & George have all previously exhibited here. Works are available to buy.

Wapping Project

Once a hydraulic power station, The Wapping Project is now the place to see daring visual arts and performance. The venue exhibits newly-commissioned works by visual artists, choreographers, composers and writers, all among the original pumps and machinery. The Engine and Turbine Houses also have a funky restaurant and bar.

Gagosian Gallery

Showcasing an ever-changing programme of contemporary art, London's Gagosian Gallery, owned by Larry Gagosian, is one of seven worldwide. The large, airy space has exhibited big names including Andy Warhol, Damien Hirst, Jackson Pollock and Roy Lichtenstein. All art is for sale.

Lazarides Gallery

A gallery that strives to be unconventional, Lazarides sells "outsider art" and represents photographers, sculptors, agent provocateurs and even taxidermists! With a private viewing space for new works, the gallery also runs Shop at Lazarides, selling limited edition prints, books and originals at affordable prices.

Hamiltons Gallery

Established in 1977, Hamiltons Gallery in Mayfair showcases the best modern masters as well as up-and-coming photographers. Previous exhibitions, by artists such as Irving Penn, Helmut Newton and Tomio Seike, demonstrate the diversity of modern photography. All imagery on show is for sale.

Lisson Gallery

Founded as an artists' exhibition space, the Lisson Gallery was the first in London to promote American minimalist art in the 60s, and has always been a platform for emerging contemporary artists, as well as more established Turner Prize winners. Shows are always thought-provoking and often represent artists who challenge the status quo.

Hauser & Wirth

Exhibiting a huge variety of contemporary artists including Louise Bourgeois and Paul McCarthy, Hauser & Wirth sits in an elegant Edwardian building on Piccadilly. One of Europe's leading international galleries, the oak-panelled space feels pleasingly different to the stark white walls of most contemporary galleries.

Phillips de Pury

One of the biggest auction houses and art dealerships in the world, Phillips de Pury also hold selling exhibitions in contemporary art and photography, as well as design and jewellery, at their London gallery, in a former Victorian post office. Phillips de Pury has a second exhibition space in the Saatchi Gallery.

Victoria Miro

A converted Victorian furniture factory in Hoxton, Victoria Miro exhibits a collection of avant-garde pieces by artists such as Andreas Gursky and Chris Ofili. The gallery's aim is to promote innovative artists and nurture new talent. Look out for the unique garden used by installation artists such as Yayoi Kusama.
