Unique London Hotels

If you're looking for a wildly romantic hotel to celebrate a special occasion - or just somewhere different - London has a huge choice of idiosyncratic hotels.

From grand institutions to Georgian houses apparently untouched by "progress", to lively contemporary boltholes. Whichever you choose, your stay in London is bound to be memorable…

The Goring

The Gore Hotel

A hotel since the 1890s, the Gore Hotel in Kensington explodes with character. More than 5,000 pictures jostle for space on the walls. The bedrooms are all unique with a minstrel's gallery in one, a secret panel in another and Judy Garland's bed in a third. For informal dining, there's the lively Bistrot 190.

Miller's

The drawing room of this super-relaxed first-floor Notting Hill hotel is an astonishing Aladdin's cave. Miller's is stacked with antiques and curiosities collected by furniture experts Martin and Ioana Miller, which glitter under dozens of candles at night. Bedrooms are more restrained but no less lovely and breakfast is served at a communal table.

Claridge's

Art deco Claridge's marries 1930s glamour with cutting-edge technology in its 203 rooms. The revamped foyer pays homage to the hotel's architectural heritage, while the Olympus Suite is a superior pampering zone. Gordon Ramsay at Claridge's restaurant will have you drooling; the swanky bar remains one of the city's hottest spots.

The Portobello

The concept of shabby-chic might have been conceived at this Notting Hill bohemian bolthole. Popular with rock musicians in the early 1970s, The Portobello has since attracted an eclectic celebrity clientele. Bedrooms vary from tiny cabins to decadent suites. And if you crave scrambled eggs and champagne at 4am, just ask.

The Fox Club

Although it's a club, anyone can join at preferential rates and make this refined Georgian townhouse their Mayfair address. The Fox Club's shady past includes spells as a casino and a bordello, but its name recalls its time as Whig politician Charles James Fox's residence. Endearingly decorated with wooden floors and eye-catching fabrics, it bursts with club-like conviviality.

Hazlitt's

It can be an uphill walk to bed over sloping, creaking floorboards at this distinctive hotel. Hazlitt's spreads over three Georgian houses in Soho. It was once home to William Hazlitt (1778 –1830), the esteemed English literary critic and essayist. Furnished with antiques, busts and prints, the rooms are popular with authors, who traditionally leave signed copies of their works before checking out.

The May Fair

The May Fair is a luxury 5 star hotel, set in exclusive Mayfair in the heart of the capital. Opened in 1927 by His Majesty King George V, this prestigious London hotel was totally refurbished in 2006. Relax and luxuriate in the generously proportioned state of the art bedrooms. Alternatively, enjoy a romantic evening together in the private theatre or luxury Mayfair Spa.
