Benares Restaurant and Bar

About Benares Restaurant and Bar

Top chef Atul Kochhar’s first solo foray in to the world of the restaurant, Benares in London’s Mayfair in Berkeley Square, has been proclaimed a roaring success by the press and public alike. An Indian restaurant unlike any other, Benares boasts a stunning minimalist design full of high-end design touches from the gleaming black stone floor to the indoor pond, complete with water lilies. And you can expect extremely professional service from highly trained staff. As impressive as the exquisite surroundings are, Benares’s menu is the heart of the enterprise. Combining Northern and Southern Indian cuisine, the menu of Kochhar and his team is a complex list of intriguing, stylish dishes taking traditional Indian recipes as their starting point. The wine carte is a superb effort to match the subtle spicing of the cuisine, with vintages that enhance the flavours and it succeeds beautifully. Undoubtedly a landmark restaurant on the London dining scene, Benares is an utterly unique proposition.

Benares is beautifully decorated & the food is delicious and well presented. If you are looking for a proper curry, this is not the place to go, but that doesn't detract from the food's quality; although it's pricey, given the portions. We had to wait nearly 1hr for our food to arrive. We complained and the manager's response was to quibble about the exact time we had to wait -wrong response! In the end he gave us a discount and drinks, which is just as well as the naan we ordered never arrived.

Was disappointed by the slowness of the service. Brought two clients as my guests and we waited half an hour between the first course and the main course. It was embarrassing, as my clients had a train to catch later that they almost missed. The giant prawns we ordered were extremely dry; I would have expected some sauce but there was only a few pieces of aubergines with tomato sauce. Far too dry. The naans we ordered was small and flat. I usually like them fluffy. Used to be better in the past.

Benares was an amazing experience. The food was lush as was the decor. An expensive night out but as a treat - well worth it!
