Harrods

One of the world's most famous department stores, established in 1849 as a humble grocery store employing two assistants. Today, it offers everything from food to fashion, furniture to sportswear plus 20 in-store restaurants serving every kind of cuisine imaginable from pizza to sushi. Services range from piano tuning to fitting saddles. Must-see sights include the Food Halls, the Egyptian Hall and the Pet Department. At night the store is illuminated by 11,500 light bulbs.

Itchy review of Harrods

Lit up at night like Blackpool Pier, Harrod’s still remains the Big Daddy of department stores, with its magnetic appeal to tourists and an older, richer clientele. Worth a visit if only to see the Dodi/Diana shrine – class.

Lonely Planet review of Harrods

Harrods remains the grande dame of British service and quality - only the Queen is a grander dame - and is steeped in the kind of culture that only tradition, history and a slew of literary references can bring. You may not be able to afford anything more than a cup of tea, but just browsing here is an essential London experience.

Visit London review of Harrods

One of the worlds most famous stores, Harrods is spread over seven floors, has more than 300 departments selling anything and everything you can imagine. It has a smart reputation and security guards at the doors politely enforce a dress code and quite right, too. Highlights include beautiful food halls, the Egyptian Hall, the Room of Luxury, the Urban Retreat Spa, and the excellent traditional and contemporary menswear department. The store really is a retailing legend.

Some of my sisters and I stopped in at Harrods because two of the sisters had never been to London or Harrods. We did a little shopping (very expensive) and then took a rest at the little coffee shop. The cappacino was very good and they write "Harrods" on it with cocoa! See picture.

Then we went to the oyster bar where we each wanted an oyster. The guy behind the counter made fun of us and pretended he couldn't speak english. We ended up having a great time with him and his partner in crime (see picture) and they ended up not charging us for the oysters.

Harrods is a must see even if it's to walk through and walk out.

I love department stores. There aren't that many left in the US anymore of your good old-fashioned upscale department stores. Harrods is not only upscale, it has everything and displays it with the most advanced technology and trendy flair around! We had a blast walking thru the store and seeing all the beautiful wares on display. The food section is incredible and very packed with customers. We were there right before Easter and got to see all the wonderful Easter goodies being sold in the chocolate section and other food sections. We wanted to sit at the coffee bar there but it was full. There are cafes on every floor. We stopped at a cafe on the fifth floor and my husband had a banana/orange juiced drink that cost approx $10USD!!! That was our first clue that this wasn't an inexpensive place to loll away the afternoon. Don't eat or drink at Harrods unless you have money to spare. Also, educate yourself on the VAT tax before you shop at Harrods. My husband bought a backpack on 3/14/08 for 64.99BP which was approximately $135.23USD. VAT tax is 17.5 percent. The staff at Harrods sent us to the VAT tax department where a very well dressed woman took care of our paperwork which we thought meant they were filling out as much of the form as they could as a courtesy to save us the trouble since we had spent our money in their store. Not so! As we were walking away we looked at the form. They had charged us approximately. 6.0BP to fill out the form and we were getting back 3.0BP. The VAT tax is 17.5% but when they figure it on the forms it is around 14%(a fee they state), THEN they take out an additional amount to fill out the form. To make a long story short, we spent 64.99BP and our VAT tax refund was 3.0BP when the VAT tax is 17.5%! Does this make sense to you? Me either. A kind Harrods employee explained very eloquently how Harrods figures up the VAT tax but Einstein's theory of relatively is less complicated. Overall experience at Harrods? It's fun! Lots to look at, including the incredibly tacky Diana/Dodi display, just don't spend unless you've won the Lotto or want to take an equity loan out on your house. Three words: Expensive but fun! Forgot to add: If you are looking for a toast rack or the little tiny used tea bag holders, go elsewhere. Not a very good selection. Only tea bag holders the staff could find had Harrods written on it.

I went to harrods and had a great time. There are many departmentrs in this store and the shops are undescrible!

It is rather expensive but its worth it once you've bought what you wish!

I think that the best part is the sweet store, it has giant easter eggs in easter and delicous sweets of all kinds!

So i stroingly recommend this shop to everyone, because it's a place that you won't forget!

You can also sign a memor book for princess diana.

So do yourself a favour and get out there and shop 'til you drop!

The food has is a foodie's haven! Gelati is one of the best I've had. Krispy Kremes are there too.

Great place to browse even though it is pricey and most definitely worth a look!
