When her father enlists to fight for the British in WW1, young Sara Crewe goes to New York to go to the same boarding school her late mother went to. She has problems with the headmistress, who tries stop Sara's creativity and ruin her confidence. When they hear that Sara's father has been killed in the war and that his estate has been taken over by the British Government, the headmistress makes Sara a servant. Sara's belief that "every girl is a princess" is put to a test.
