Crown jewellers Garrard created the royal engagement ring for William's mother, Diana Spencer, in 1981. Now Wills has passed the sapphire ring to Kate as a way of involving his late mother in the wedding. Harvey Nichols

Kate Middleton's been a fan of designer Daniella Issa Helayel for years and chose the Issa London Sapphire dress for her engagement announcement photos. The dress sold out immediately, as did copies by Tesco and Peacocks, but you can still pick up other Issa dresses at Harvey Nichols

Kensington Palace

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will make Kensington Palace their permanent London home next year, when they move into Princess Margaret's former apartment. You can visit the recently refurbished palace – new attractions include an exhibition about Queen Victoria's life and a display of Princess Diana's dresses.

Madame Tussauds

Get close to the royal couple at Madame Tussauds, where you can see life-like wax figures of Will and Kate. The Duchess is dressed in a replica of her blue Issa engagement dress as well as her famous engagement ring. The couple are situated in the royal zone alongside other wax versions of the royal family.

With a degree in history of art, it's no surprise that Kate chose to be Patron of the National Portrait Gallery in Trafalgar Square. She recently attended a special preview of the Lucian Freud Portraits exhibition there, and has agreed to pose for a portrait for the gallery.

High street retailer Reiss is a firm favourite of Kate's and she's chosen it for a number of formal events, including the white Nanette dress in her official engagement photos. Westminster Abbey

William and Kate followed in the footsteps of many other royals, including Henry I and Richard II, as well as the present Queen, who were married at Westminster Abbey.
