Lonely Planet review of Monument

Reviewed by: Lonely Planet

This is a huge memorial to the Great Fire of London of 1666. Wren's tower was built in 1677 and has panoramic views of London. It is exactly 60.6m from the bakery in Pudding Lane where the fire started, and exactly 60.6m high. To reach the viewing platform, just below a gilded bronze urn of flames, you will need to climb 311 narrow, winding steps.

Visit the new summer installation at this 21-metre hoarding mural. The artwork depicts London's cityscape across the seasons, with a historical strand relating to The Great Fire of 1666, evolving throughout the Monument Major Repair. Created by city children, young people and adults, with artist Richard Tait, as part of the Festival's education programme.
