review of Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese

Any boozer with a cheese related name has got to be worth a look. We quite dig that whole ye olde thing too... especially as this place, miraculously, doesn't seem to get overrun with excitable American tourists. Inside it's all snugs and cubby holes. There are even areas with labels banning women left over from day of old (we hope). Food is good and apart from the odd crowd of Monopoly Pub Crawlers (they do this one for Fleet Street) it's a good place to waste away an afternoon or evening.

Full of literary history
What sets this pub apart is not its age (since 1667) or its ale or food menu (both fairly standard). The fascinating lure of this locale is its literary history. What joy to tip a glass in the same spot as Samuel Johnson, Arthur Conan Doyle, Mark Twain or Charles Dickens. Once you have soaked up the atmosphere upstairs, make your way down to the vaulted cellars which were part of the original building on this site, a monastery. It provides a whole different kind of atmosphere. Make sure you watch your head!
Great Hole in the Wall
At first glance, my boyfriend was not very thrilled. It's dark. Smoky. We weren't sure where to go or how to order - but the staff there was amazing! There was an Australian bartender in the back that was incredible - very friendly. We had a panini and Stella pints. We still talk about that panini over one year later! I highly recommend going for the atmosphere and the food.
Bartender is a thief! STAY AWAY
The bartender is a thief! I recently went to Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese (April 29, 2007 at 4pm) and the bartender named Marshall stole L10 ($20 USD) from me by refusing to give me proper change. Even when confronted he refused to return my money. There were several witnesses to this event. I recommend that you stay away from this den of thieves!
Superb memories and great food!!!
My wife and I dined here back in September last year. What great service and food. Compared to other places, the food was also reasonably priced.
We sat at the table where Dickens and Samuel Johnson dined. My wife really enjoyed our time here and would go back in a heartbeat.
The portions were large and the flavors were great. The service was impeccable and the people friendly. We went to the bar and hammed it up with some locals.
Although we spent a couple of hours there, we went away with memories to cherish!!
Great pub!!!!
This pub has been my first port of call in London every year for the last 5 and I'll be there again, later this year. There's a front bar and a back bar. I've used both to meet up with friends but prefer the front bar because it's closer to the door... I always need a drink as soon as I reach London, so don't want to walk those few extra paces for a drink. I believe there's a function room upstairs. There's a restaurant at street level, across a narrow corridor from the front bar, so yet another reason why I favour that bar.
The stairs are kind of narrow and a bit cramped - don't try to walk up, or down those stairs standing straight up or you'll hit your head on something quite solid. The toilets are down the stairs, so you WILL need to use the stairs at some stage during your time there, but it's all part of the fun of the experience in this really old world pub.
The old world atmosphere is immediately noticeable as you enter the pub but the service is right up to the minute and very friendly and efficient. I'd like to add a photo or two but the fact is that I've always been so busy catching up with friends who I haven't seen in 12 months, or more, that I haven't ever taken any photos of the pub. Just group photos of friends, which I don't really want to publish here. Maybe someone else will be encouraged to post a photo or 2 of the inside of the pub - the external photos that are already available on this website will certainly help you to find the place!
