  In the 17th century, many Alehouses were turned into Musick-Houses where one might meet Henry Purcell and other composers presenting new works, or just duelling with local folk-musicians. Norwegian wizards of baroque and folk music revisit this repertoire with spectacular results.

   

• Bartok: Mikrokosmos 1

  Performed with a dancer Megan Saunders and live interactive film, this staged performance of Bartk's seminal collection for the piano, Mikrokosmos, was greeted with great acclaim in 2008. Composed between 1926 and 1939, it was described by the composer as 'a synthesis of all the musical and technical problems', and these playful, beautiful and exciting works encapsulate Bartk's stunning compositional sound world.

• Berio: Sequenza and Solos

  In 1958 Berio undertook one of his most celebrated compositional ideas, his series of sequenzas. Number VIII for violin is seen by many as the most successful and exhilarating of all Berio's solo works.
