The Hackney Empire was groundbreaking when it opened in 1901, and as one of London's leading independent theatres it continues to push the boundaries today. Lovingly restored after a stint as a bingo hall, the venue is a beautiful example of an Edwardian theatre. The varied programme includes comedy, dance, family shows, music, drama and much more. You can even take a backstage tour to find out all about the Empire's rich history.

I went to see 'Once on this Island' last night with some friends, and it was absolutely brilliant. It's a lively caribean musical about a peasant girl who resures a wealthy man from car accident and falls in love with him. It's very atmospheric, and fun - the singing was amazing, and the dancing great too. It was also very funny at parts.

If you're in the East end, make sure you visit the Hackney Empire - it's a lovely theatre and just as good if not better than theatres in the west end, plus much better value for money!
