History of Theatre Royal Drury Lane
The history of Theatre Royal Drury Lane is as dramatic as the shows that have graced its stage, filled with stories of innovation and rebirth.
First built by Thomas Killigrew in 1663 after receiving a royal patent from King Charles II, "The Lane"has been a cornerstone of London's theatre scene for more than 350 years. After the original building was destroyed by fire in 1672, a new theatre opened in 1674 - with designs thought to include contributions from Sir Christopher Wren, the famous architect of St Paul's Cathedral and the Old Royal Naval College in Greenwich.
Through centuries of rebuilds, royal visits, and world-famous productions, Theatre Royal Drury Lane has remained a place where Londoners and visitors gather to be entertained. Today, following a £60 million restoration, the theatre's sweeping grand staircase, ornate ceilings and glittering chandeliers have been returned to their former glory, ready to wow a new generation of theatre-goers.
Whether you're visiting for the latest hit musical, a behind-the-scenes tour or simply wish to soak up the atmosphere with a cocktail in the Grand Saloon, this Covent Garden gem is an essential stop on any theatre lover's London itinerary.
Did you know?
One of the theatre's most famous early performers was Nell Gwyn, who began her acting career as a teenager. Her quit wit and charm made her a star of the stage and caught the attention of King Charles II, with whom she later had two children.
