Down House - Home of Charles Darwin
About
Learn about the life and work of British naturalist Charles Darwin at Down House in Kent.
The house was Darwin’s home for 40 years and is where he wrote his groundbreaking work, On the Origin of Species.
See original manuscript pages in the exhibition, stand in the study where they were written and admire many original artefacts, including possessions that date from Darwin’s time on HMS Beagle.
Follow in the great man’s footsteps outside with a stroll along the Sandwalk, described as the “thinking path”, where Darwin took daily walks. Interactive panels in the gardens show how the plants and wildlife provided a wealth of inspiration and opportunities for observation.
The old kitchen where Darwin’s meals were prepared is now a cafe serving tasty treats and delicious lunches.
