Itchy review of ZSL London Zoo

Exotic beasts, homegrown species, reptiles, insects - we've all been to enough zoos on school trips to know what goes on at a zoo... But London Zoo is the cream of the crop and one of the most famous zoos in all the world. Opened in 1828 but only opening its doors to the public in 1847, it houses 650 species, 112 of which are listed as threatened in the Red Data books. It's also well respected for its participation in breeding programmes for 130 species.

I went to London zoo last week expecting to have a great family day out! I hadn't been since I was a child and really didn't remember much about it. The enclosures were so small it was heart breaking. I'm not sure what I expected but I didn't think the Victorian styled zoo would still be going to the same format. There clearly isn't space for these animals and it shows, with many animals displaying signs of extreme boredom. They are in good health but this isn't the place for them. There are many other zoos and parks across the UK that have much more space, so I guess the only reason London Zoo is still going is to make money (not surprisingly everything is priced at a premium, but that's to be expected of a London tourist attraction). I thought there was very little for children to do to get the younger children interested and to hold their attention. The children in our party (aged 3, 5 and 8) were more impressed by the playground facilities. We could have taken them to the park for a fraction of the cost. At other animal parks and zoos, they have been able to do activities relating to the particular animal at each enclosure that got their attention and taught them something about the animals. There were few things like that at London Zoo. Also, we found the glass on a lot of the enclosures extremely frustrating. They hadn't been treated with any kind of anti-glare material so it was near impossible to see in and point out to the children where many of the animals were. Overall, very disappointing, and has certainly made me question the need for zoos of this type.

I visited London Zoo the other day and i have got to say how very very poor it was. The enclosures were small and the animals didn't look happy. I am somewhat of a big cat expert - especially tigers and have got to say that when I saw the Sumatran Tiger I actually cried! The poor creature was in a very small enclosure - nowhere near big enough for it's needs (even in captivity) - it was pacing up and down over and over again over the same piece of ground, which is an indication of severe bordom. There were only a couple of logs on the ground - no bushes for it to lie in/under and absolutely nothing to stimulate them. No balls, not a tyre hanging from a tree - nothing. It was pitiful. The tiger looked very unhappy and distressed, however, there was nobody around I could speak to.

The other animals (if you got to see any) all looked unhappy and in awful enclosures.

I personally think London Zoo just gets as much money out of the tourists as it can. It is the worst zoo i have EVER been to. I can't believe that after reading all the negative reviews on this zoo that further action has not been taken.

Everything about my visit was horrible. Even a cheeseburger was L4.00!

My wife and I visit zoos wherever we go. The London Zoo is expensive to get into and small, with marginal conditions for the limited numbers and types of creatures on display. There were one or two interesting highlights (otters, a temporary butterfly aviary), but for the most part, very disappointing. Considering this is a world class city and a very old zoo with a very interesting history, London has really dropped the ball on this one. Save your money (over $30.00 US just to get in, versus $24.50 to get into the AMAZING San Diego Zoo) and don't believe the hype! Much of what you see in the advertising for the London Zoo you will NOT see once you get in. I would very much like to tell you that the London Zoo is worthwhile, but it is not...

I saw a poster in London underground, of beautiful colourful lush flowers and plants, with a child standing amongst all the vegetation. A hummingbird was hovering close to his face. The poster said come and have the same experience in London Zoo.

Wow I thought what an experience that would be - I must go.

My husband and myself duly set off and arrived at Camden Town Tube Station, where an arrow on railings outside promptly sent us of in the wrong direction. Half an hour later we thought we were never going to get there. Eventually having found another sign post, this time pointing in the correct direction, we got to the Zoo entrance. We got in the queue for tickets, only two more couples ahead of us - great I thought - soon be inside. Ten minutes later we got to the counter, the poor staff were having to ask everyone for their names and adresses, so they could claim tax back - heaven knows how long it took those at the end of the queue to get in. Needless to say I was a bit ratty by this time, and demanded two tickets to the zoo and nothing else please!

Never mind I thought, I am going to see hummingbirds at close range - we made straight for the aviary. What a disappointment. Such a drab place, even though it had recently been painted. But worse was to come. The hummingbirds were in two small cages which had been roped off, so we had to view them from two feet away. If I was a child I would have burst into tears with disappointment. The Zoo advertisment had all been a lie.

I was very surprised that such a famous zoo in such a famous city would be so poor. The animals were in cramped conditions and looked sad and bored. The lions were asleep, the tiger invisible and the gorillas sat silently. I saw a few monkeys but there was very little interaction between them, they sat and stared. Perhaps it is not surprising when the environment is so limited and unchanging.

The surrounding area of Regents Park is beautiful and provides lovely walks. But the zoo needs to be updated, its concrete buildings, its poor and untidy restaurants and the facilities it provides for the animals.
