Haringey

Cutting-edge music and theatre, award-winning parks, Premiership football, rolling marshes, an international film festival, idyllic riverside walks, innovative and inexpensive independent retailers, delicious Turkish Restaurants, and all 25 minutes from the West End. Welcome to Haringey!

Haringey

Haringey is a borough on the up. It's easy to reach with regular trains from Liverpool Street to Tottenham Hale, the Piccadilly Line to Wood Green and Victoria Line to Seven Sisters.

Alight at any of these stops and you can enjoy the best the borough has to offer.

Tottenham Marshes

At Tottenham Hale, you're minutes away from the River Lea. Take a stroll along the river and the beautiful, unspoilt Tottenham Marshes where there's plenty of wildlife to spot.

Once you've built up an appetite, enjoy a hearty riverside meal at the 18th-century Ferry Boat Inn or the Lock Restaurant, which featured in the 2007 Michelin guide.

Bernie Grant Arts Centre

At Seven Sisters, you can check out the best in the local and international arts scene at the recently opened Bernie Grant arts centre. The centre bears the name of Tottenham's late legendary black MP Bernie Grant (1944-2000), whose vision for a fairer Britain and a fairer world inspired him to embark on creating this space. It is his legacy to creative, culturally diverse talent based locally, nationally and internationally.

White Hart Lane

Take a leisurely stroll down Tottenham High Road to White Hart Lane to watch Tottenham Hotspur football club (Spurs) in action and stop off for a coffee and something to read at the Evi Bookhouse.

Evi won the Best Retailer award in the 2007 Haringey Business Awards and offers a wide range of Turkish, Kurdish and English Language books, CDs and DVDS alongside a wide variety of educational and community events.

Bruce Castle Museum

If you don't fancy the football, it's just a few minutes walk to Bruce Castle Museum. This 16th-century Manor House is situated in 8 hectares of parkland where you can admire the magnificent ancient oak tree that dominates the parks northern side.

Shopping City

For shopping and entertainment stay on the train to Wood Green and the famous Shopping City (High Road, Wood Green, London, N22).

You can also enjoy a movie at one of the two cinemas where every April the Wood Green International Short Film Festival showcases the best new film from around the world. Check out the Wood Green Film Festival website for more information.

Crouch End

If the high street's too busy, catch a bus to the more sedate Crouch End for some of the best independent shops in London. From there it's just a short stroll to one of Haringey's hidden gems, Stationers Park, where the floral displays are renowned for their colours and vibrancy all year round.

Haringey's Parks

There are 8 Green Flag award-winning parks in Haringey; no borough has more. Finsbury Park has just been transformed after undergoing a £5m restoration and improvement programme with new tennis courts, play areas and a cafe. For more information on Haringey's Green Flag award-winning parks, see www.haringey.gov.uk

Indeed Haringey is aiming to be one of London's greenest boroughs. The council's Better Haringey programme has already provided £20m worth of environmental improvements and investment in the past 4 years. Visit the Better Haringey website

Green Lanes

If you leave Finsbury Park at Green Lanes and head up towards Turnpike Lane, you'll find a wide array of Greek and Turkish restaurants and grocers where you can sample delicious kebabs, cooked in the traditional way on the ockabasi grill.

And there is much more. Jackson's Lane Arts Centre, Alexandra Palace, the wonderful Caribbean bakers, Highgate Woods and the galleries and boutiques in Muswell Hill all make Haringey an exciting, vibrant and unusual destination on a visit to London.
