Unsurprisingly, given his background as an alumnus of ground-breaking nose-to-tail restaurant St John, head chef and owner Lee Tiernan serves up the likes of lamb offal and pig cheek alongside more conventional meats at his grill restaurant Black Axe Mangal.

Vegetarians are not forgotten, however, with the likes of broad bean falafel, and cabbage salad with preserved lemon some of the standout options.

The atmosphere at this no-reservations Highbury eatery is informal and noisy, aided by rock hits blaring out from the sound system. This makes it a great place for dinner or brunch with friends, if not for an intimate meal.
