This was an interesting meal for me in that it is hard to judge the experience without being so anchored on other Japanese places. What got me to go here was that it had an afternoon tea which was alternative and modern. It wasn't the hoity toity type of afternoon tea that one expects from the city of London.

Booking: easy and smooth through open table. I chose the afternoon tea option and I added a note about my friend who is lactose intolerant. I got confirmation in the app and by email straight away and got a phone call on the day to double check.

An exciting and fresh take on Asian fusion/Izakaya that definitely worth a second visit (if you are not on a budget).

The overall decor of the restaurant is a bit whimsical. Wooden tables and chairs. Wooden screens (or byobu in Japanese) in between tables. Is this the modern Japanese style? Maybe not.

My boyfriend and I might have ordered the portion for 4, but we managed to finish everything we ordered. Everything tastes nice, but the portions are fairly small, which is as expected. It's more of modern Japanese food with some European ideas in it, but cooked in a delicate way.

Jason Atherton is opening new restaurants at a rate not seen since Gordon Ramsey had his rapid expansion phase and I have always been impressed with the consistently high quality but after a recent disappointing re-visit to his Singapore restaurant Esquina I was a bit worried.
