St Paul’s Church in Covent Garden is perhaps best recognised as the backdrop to some of Covent Garden’s many street performers, where crowds gather to see a variety of entertaining acts.
Its nickname as the Actor’s Church began with the opening of nearby Theatre Royal, Drury Lane in 1663, and then strengthened with the opening of what is now the Royal Opera House. The church now has its own in-house professional theatre company, Iris Theatre.
During the day, the church gardens are a great oasis of calm away from the crowds of Covent Garden.
