  • Easter is celebrated in April in 2021 (it sometimes falls in March).

  • April events in London usually include the Feast of St George and the Sikh festival of Vaisakhi.

  • The Queen’s official birthday is in June, but her actual birthday is 21 April. 

By April, spring awakens London. As crisp sunny days and the first blossoms take over, the coldest months wave goodbye in favour of more sunshine and the occasional sharp shower.

Experience the city teeming with beautiful blooms in gardens, take a walk in London’s parks, or visit nature reserves to spot wildlife this month.

Many of the city's shops, outdoor attractions and alfresco hospitality venues are due to reopen on 12 April at the earliest, following the proposed easing of coronavirus restrictions. Check back nearer the time for confirmation and be aware that some venues may still be closed after this date. 

Virtual and at-home activities to join in April

  • Find lots of fun and delicious ways to spend Easter from home this year, as London buzzes with virtual events, chocolate home deliveries and more.
  • Get your household ready for a virtual afternoon gig as part of London Unlocked, which brings live performances online every Sunday in April. 
  • Explore the theme of design in theatre, from three individuals with three different backgrounds, with 2036 from Bush Theatre, available online.
  • Watch a 2019 recording of The Passion of Jesus from home, as the show is streamed for free on Good Friday.

What are the biggest annual events in April?

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, many events have been cancelled or take place virtually. Get a flavour of what you can usually enjoy in the city in April below.

  • Celebrate England's national day in Trafalgar Square with the Feast of St George, including live music, food stalls, and a friendly dragon.
  • Trafalgar Square welcomes the Sikh festival of Vaisakhi in April with performances, arts events, food and family activities. 
  • Although the Queen celebrates her official birthday in June, her actual birthday is 21 April. Listen out for gun salutes in central London to mark the occasion: one usually takes place at Hyde Park and another at the Tower of London.
